Going from a waiter apprentice to being the head of his own hotel chain

Georg Imlauer is living an Austrian fairytale

The stories in which a dishwasher becomes a millionaire usually take place in America, and most are simple made up. Not here in Austria - here is where Georg Imlauer made his own personal fairytale come true. The former cook and waiter apprentice just opened his fifth four-star hotel just a few weeks ago and is counted as one of the most successful hoteliers in our country.

Just a few minutes walk from the 1st Viennese District, Georg Imlauer landed his fifth hotel-coup. Owing to its location, the Imlauer Hotel Nestroy at Rotensterngasse 10, a quiet side street in the 2nd District, is appropriate for both business travelers and tourists interested in visiting the most important landmarks and attractions of the Austrian capital on foot. While the first group enjoys the short distance to the Convention-Exhibition Center and the center of the city; the others enjoy the walk to the Prater, to St. Stephen's Cathedral or the Augarten porcelain manufracturer, as they are all practically right around the corner. Several seminar rooms with the most modern technology allow for company events and meetings to be carried out in a perfect infrastructure. With its 62 rooms, junior suites and suites, the Nestroy continues the welcome tradition of the Imlauer-Hotels: the hotels are not over-dimensioned bed fortresses; rather, they offer room for a select number of guests who can all be personally attended to and pampered with Austrian hospitality.

The Hotel Mercure Imlauer Wien, which has belonged to the group of Imlauer Hotels for some time now, is located right next door from the Nestroy. The glass covered courtyard with its wonderful conservatory and charming lobby bar is one of the most popular locations in Vienna to enjoy an evening drink after an exciting or work-filled day. 87 air-conditioned rooms, studios and suites, as well as four seminar rooms with modern furnishings are waiting for guests in the 4-star hotel. The car can be confidently left in the hotel's underground parking garage because the next subway station is only three minutes walk from the hotel entrance.

The successful hotel owner's roots are not in Vienna, however, but rather in Salzburg. It was here that Georg Imlauer acquired his first hotel, the StieglBräu. Two additional locations in immediate proximity now complete the four-star empire in the Mozart City: the Best Western Hotel Imlauer and the traditional Crowne Plaza Salzburg - the Pitter are located directly across from the Congress House and just a few minutes walk from Salzburg's Old Town. Seminar rooms, event rooms, and a large spectrum of culinary offers in the different hotel restaurants make sure that the people from Salzburg, as well as the guests, always feel welcome at the Imlauer-hotels.

The Secrets of His Success

How does a man rise like a shooting star? Georg Imlauer always knew what he wanted and followed his path with a lot of sweat and tears. After his apprenticeship as a cook and waiter, he gathered work experience in Germany and on two cruise ships. Several seasons passed in Austria before he became the director of the Salzburger StieglBrau restaurant, which he ran for 13 years. Then, he took over the F&B managerial position for the K+K group. However, the position as Business Director was not enough for the ambitious manager. So, over the past 10 years, Georg Imlauer has continuously built up his own little hotel empire with great success. Last year, he enjoyed having over 100,000 overnight guests and an occupancy rate of over 75%.

Another secret to his success are the Georg Imlauer's employees. Commitment to performance, respect, good wages, advancement possibilities and great independence are key factors for successful management. Owing to his years of experience, he well knows: good employees are the best references a hotel can have.

The only missing factor is a collection of innovative ideas that every hotelier must have today in order to be successful. Georg Imlauer wins points in this as well. For example, right now he offers a "Dog Home Alone" package, with which he knowingly reaches out to guests who enjoy having their dog alone with them on their vacation. The four-legged guests receive a gift of a half kilo of Nestlé Beneful dog food, a feeding bowl and a carrot clip to reclose everything - in this way even the dog can become a hotel patron.

All of the Imlauer hotels can be booked on the AustriaCongress website. The team of AustriaCongress is also always available for planning seminars in the Imlauer hotels.
